What does a ChatGPT ad look like, and who sees it?
A ChatGPT ad is one sponsored box under the answer, labelled as sponsored. It does not appear in temporary chats, when the user is logged out, or next to sensitive topics such as health or politics (Search Engine Land, 19 August 2026).
Who sees it matters more than what it looks like. Ads are shown only to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Anyone paying for Plus, Pro or Enterprise never sees an ad (Euronews, 21 August 2026). Guests who pay for ChatGPT, often your best-paying ones, are outside the ad's reach entirely.
The second thing to understand: the advertiser cannot touch the answer. OpenAI states that advertisers never see chats or personal data and cannot influence what ChatGPT recommends (Search Engine Land, 19 August 2026). If a guest asks "which apartment in Zadar has parking and is close to the beach" and ChatGPT names three, your ad sits under those three. It does not put you among them. Being the fifth is the same as not existing. An ad is, at best, a sixth.
How does targeting work if there are no keywords?
Google Search ads run on the words a person typed. ChatGPT ads run on three things: the context of the conversation, the user's general location, and their language. If the user opts in, past chats can be used too (Search Engine Land, 19 August 2026). There is no keyword list to bid on, no exact match, no negative keywords.
In practice, a family in Munich asking in German about a week in Makarska in July is the conversation your ad enters. Three consequences:
- Language is targeting. If the ad shows in a German conversation and lands on a Croatian-only page, you paid for nothing.
- "General location" is the guest's location, not yours. You are reaching a person in Germany, Poland or the UK who is still planning, not a person already in Split.
- You never see the conversation, only aggregate reporting. Measurement has to happen on your own website.
What do ChatGPT ads cost in 2026?
They are sold on CPM, a price per thousand impressions. During the US beta, industry reporting put CPMs at around $60, with pilot commitments in the region of $200,000 (Search Engine Land, 19 August 2026; Commit Agency explainer, 2026). Those are not small-business numbers, and OpenAI has not pretended otherwise.
In Europe, Croatia included, buying currently goes through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team, agency partners or technology partners. A self-serve Ads Manager was announced for "later this summer". As of 9 September 2026 it is not confirmed for Croatia (Euronews, 21 August 2026).
For a €300-a-month business, that means:
- At a $60 CPM, €300 buys roughly 5,000 impressions a month, before exchange rate. Impressions, not clicks, not bookings. The same money in Google Search buys clicks from people who typed "rent a car Split airport".
- The problem is not the CPM, it is the minimum. Nobody on the coast can walk in with €300 today. Two routes exist: wait for self-serve and see its minimum, or go through an agency partner that pools several clients' budgets into one pilot.
- Pooling only works if the pool is honest: the same type of conversation, the same language, the same landing-page quality, and impressions reported per client. Get that in writing before you pay.
ChatGPT ads vs Google Search ads vs Meta ads vs organic AI citation: which one fits?
| ChatGPT ads | Google Search ads | Meta ads | Organic AI citation (AEO) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who sees it | Logged-in adults on Free and Go. Plus, Pro and Enterprise never see ads (Euronews, 21 August 2026) | Anyone searching Google | Facebook and Instagram users | Everyone who asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, plus Google AI Overviews, on roughly 45% of searches |
| Intent | Mid to high: a planning question, often with dates and a budget | Highest: someone typed "rent a car Split airport" | Low: an interruption while scrolling. Strong for retargeting | The same question as the ad, but you are inside the answer |
| Targeting | Conversation context, general location, language, opt-in past chats. No keywords | Keywords, location, language, device, hour | Interests, demographics, lookalikes, retargeting | Earned through content, reviews and third-party mentions, which are about 6.5 times more likely to earn a citation than your own site |
| Cost model | CPM, per 1,000 impressions | CPC, per click | CPM auction | No media cost. Your time, or a monthly fee |
| Minimum realistic budget | US beta pilots around $200,000. Self-serve minimum unknown for Croatia | A few hundred euros a month for one service in one city | A few hundred euros a month for retargeting | €0 if you do it yourself. From €300 a month with us |
| Measurability | OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API exist, but are weeks old in Europe | Mature: conversion tracking, call tracking, GA4 | Pixel and Conversions API. Attribution is modelled | Assistant referrals in GA4, "how did you find us", bookings attributed to assistants |
| When it makes sense | A large brand budget, or a pooled pilot with per-client reporting | You have a direct booking path and empty dates to fill | You have site visitors to retarget and good photos | Always. It is the thing the ad sits beneath |
Which conversations trigger an ad, by business type and city?
These are the questions guests ask an assistant. Each is a conversation an ad could enter. Each also gets a direct answer that names two or three businesses first.
Apartments and villas
- Zadar: "Family of four driving from Munich in July. Apartment in Zadar near a sandy beach, parking, under €150 a night, booked directly rather than through Booking."
- Šibenik: "Apartment with a pool between Šibenik and Krka for five nights in June, two couples, quiet."
- Makarska: "Which part of the Makarska Riviera is quieter for a couple in September, and who rents sea-view apartments there?"
The ad needs a landing page in the guest's language with a price, a calendar and a direct booking button. The organic answer needs reviews, a page that states exactly these attributes (parking, beach distance, pool) and mentions on third-party sites. See our guide on getting your apartment recommended by ChatGPT.
Rent-a-car
- Split: "Staying in Trogir for five days. Do I need a car, and where do I rent one at Split airport without deposit surprises?"
- Dubrovnik: "Rent a car at Dubrovnik airport for a day trip to Montenegro. Which companies allow cross-border driving?"
Tours and boats
- Split: "Blue Cave tour from Split on a small boat, not 40 people. What does it cost and how early do we leave?"
- Zadar: "Kornati day trip from Zadar. Sailing boat or speedboat for two adults who get seasick?"
- Makarska: "Half-day boat trip from Makarska to Brač with swimming stops, family with a toddler."
Taxi and transfers
- Dubrovnik: "Landing at Dubrovnik airport at midnight with two kids. Cheapest safe way to the Old Town?"
- Šibenik: "Fixed-price transfer from Split airport to Primošten for six people with luggage. How do I book?"
Every one of these is a planning question with money attached. The ad sits under the answer.
Why this matters for Zadar, Šibenik, Split, Makarska and Dubrovnik
| City | County overnights 2025 (Croatian National Tourist Board, January 2026) | Typical triggering conversation | The gap we see most often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zadar | Zadar County: 15.5 million | Drive-in families from Germany, Austria and Czechia: apartments with parking, Kornati trips | Apartment sites in Croatian and English only. No German page |
| Šibenik | Šibenik-Knin County: 6.6 million | Krka plus islands. Fewer conversations, so each one counts more | Operators mentioned nowhere but their own site: nothing to cite |
| Split | Split-Dalmatia County: 20.9 million | Airport arrivals: rent-a-car, transfers, Blue Cave. The heaviest competition on the coast | No direct booking path. Marketplace-only sellers pay commission on every ad click |
| Makarska | Split-Dalmatia County: part of 20.9 million | Riviera apartments, Biokovo, boats to Brač | Pages that say "beautiful" instead of "sea view, parking, 200 m to the beach" |
| Dubrovnik | Dubrovnik-Neretva County: 9.3 million | Fly-in guests from the UK and US: transfers and private tours | "Contact us for a quote" where the guest wanted a fixed price |
What should you do before you spend a euro on ChatGPT ads?
- Get cited organically first. Statistics with sources lift the likelihood of being cited by 37–40% and quotes by about 30% (Princeton GEO study, KDD 2024). Comparison content earns about a third of AI citations. For our client Malduk Adventures in Omiš, AI-driven results rose 48% in two months after our AI visibility work, with more than 100 bookings attributed to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in that period. Expect 6–10 weeks where content exists, a quarter or more where it has to be built. This is what AEO and AI SEO management does.
- Fix your Google Business Profile. Correct category, service area, hours, real photos, a reply to every review. Assistants lean on the same trust signals Google Maps does.
- Build a direct booking path. Booking.com commission averages about 15%, Preferred Partner about 18%, Preferred Plus about 23%, plus 1.1–3.1% with Payments by Booking.com (Houst, "Booking.com fees for hosts", 2026). An ad that sends the guest to your Booking listing pays twice. A direct booking typically saves 15–20%. Our guide on booking commission vs direct bookings shows the arithmetic.
- Build the landing page in the guest's language. Germany produced 22.3 million overnights in 2025, Slovenia 11.1 million, Austria 8.2 million, Poland 7.3 million, Czechia 4.9 million, the UK 4.1 million (Croatian National Tourist Board, January 2026). German first for Zadar and Šibenik. English first for Split and Dubrovnik.
- Install measurement before, not after. GA4 with booking events, Google Ads conversion tracking, Meta Pixel and Conversions API if you run Meta, and the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API the day you get access. This is the unglamorous part of marketing funnel creation, and it decides whether any report means anything.
- Put the money into Google Search while you wait. Over three years of Google Ads for our client Malduk Adventures, day-tour bookings went from 2–3 a week to 10–15 a day, with cost per acquisition down 20% year on year. Google Ads management removes wasted spend in the first two weeks and moves enquiries within a month. Boat operators should start with the Google Ads guide for boat tours and excursions.
- Do all of it in winter. The season is won in February. The winter marketing calendar for Dalmatia gives the order.
What should you ask any agency selling you ChatGPT ads?
- Are you buying through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team or through a named partner? Which one?
- Whose account is it? Do I own the account, the pixel, the creative and the data when we stop?
- What is the minimum commitment, and is my budget pooled with other clients? If so, how are impressions reported per client?
- What CPM are you paying OpenAI, and what is your margin on top?
- In which languages and to which countries will my ad show?
- How will you count a booking: the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API, or a promise?
- Do you know that Plus, Pro and Enterprise users never see the ad?
- Can you show me a live ad you have run, with the report next to it, and is the first month without a contract?
- Would you ever tell me not to do this? If the answer is never, walk away.
Who should not run ChatGPT ads yet?
- If €300 a month is your whole marketing budget. Put it into Google Search or the direct booking page.
- If every night you sell goes through Booking.com or Airbnb and you have no direct booking page. You would pay for the impression, then commission on the booking.
- If your website is only in Croatian, or only in English while your guests are German.
- If you cannot say how many bookings last month came from your own website. Measurement first.
- If you have no recent reviews. An assistant has nothing to cite and a guest nothing to check.
- If someone promised you a guaranteed spot "in the ChatGPT answer". The ad is under the answer, not in it. Nobody can sell the answer.
For most owners we talk to between Zadar and Dubrovnik, our honest advice in September 2026 is: not yet. Spend the money on photos, a direct booking page and getting cited. Come back when self-serve arrives with a minimum you can afford, or a pooled pilot exists with reporting you can check yourself.
